Let us first understand what is a democracy,

Democracy is a form of government that is elected by citizens of that government

Different types of democracies:

1. Direct Democracy

2. Representative Democracy

3. Parliamentary Democracy

4. Presidential Democracy

5. Mixed Democracy

India follows Parliamentary type of democracy

Merits of Democracy:

•A democracy provides it's people political and social equality.

•It provides room for people to correct their own mistakes

•It allows all the sections of people to involve in decision making process

•It provides people the expression of speech and thought.

•It provides peaceful and best way to resolve conflicts of people.

Demerits of democracy:

•Generally,there is a delay in decisions as many people have to be consulted

•There is a scope of corruption as the law and rules are flexible and lenient.

•People in the governmental system,tend to get away with corruption and crime

•Rigging in elections and a lot of money is spent for the purpose of elections

Albeit all this, democracy is the best form of government

DEMOCRACY :

The word "Democracy" was derived from two Greek words : "Demo" and "Kratos" which means "people" and "rule". It means that people rule. In simple words the word Democracy means the rule of people.

According to Abraham Lincoln,

"Democracy is a government of the people,by the people and for the people".

Merits of Democracy :

• In Democracy, there won't be any despotic or dictatorial rule.

• The people wished representatives rule them.

• People are the rulers in the Democracy.

• The laws are framed on the basis of people's wishes.

• There is the chance of equality among all.

• People can enjoy their Universal Adult Franchise.

• People can enjoy liberty, Fraternity, Justice etc.

Demerits of Democracy :

• There is a lag in decision-making. It takes lot of time.

• Not all the people participate in the Democracy.

• We can experience the problems like Corruption etc.

• Distribution of wealth is not same in Democracy.

• In Democracy the majority party dominates the government.

• Democracy is the expensive form of government.
