Well if that is the question then here is my explanation:
During the Civil War period the North had an industrialized economy, while the South had an agrarian economy. The Republicans are into industry, economy, business, etc. The Democrats are still in support of an agricultural economy, just like the South was in the time period of the Civil War and the first half of the 1800s. These political parties have the same standpoint/view as the North and South. Therefore, Democrats are like the South and Republicans are like the North.
