Kerala will be celebrating the Onam festival virtually this year, due to the rise in COVID-19 cases. The state government has decided to take this action to ensure the safety of people, and the same was recently announced by State Tourism Minister PA Mohammed Riyas.
As per the reports, the virtual celebration of the festival will be formally inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on August 14th.
Referring to the virtual celebrations, the Minister added that as part of this government’s new initiative, Kerala's food, art, culture, and favourite tourist destinations would be showcased virtually with the help of visual media and other means.
The Minister, while talking to the media professions, stated that the state government is working to revive domestic tourism by using an app, wherein unexplored tourist destinations will be identified in in various districts, which will be collated on the said app, in order to attract attention from domestic, as well as international tourists.
He also informed that World Flower Arrangement Competition will also be part of the said initiative, for which online registrations will start from August 10. To take part in the competition, Malayalees from all over the world can upload their onam pookalam or flower arrangement on the tourism department's digital platform.
