Compression of the  'Any Women' and Mother:A cradle poems

The poem “Any Woman” by Katherine Tynan is a beautifully worded poem that emphasizes the importance of a mother figure in every person’s life. She starts the poem with the central metaphor of a house and how no house is complete without a mother. She is the pillar of the house that keeps it steady and strong. She is not just the foundation- she is the light, life, and love that fills the house. The children in the house warm their hands at her and their hearts as well. Without her presence, the house would be cold and the children would not thrive. Finally, she compares the chores done by a mother and describes them as “having a thousand hands”. She is compared to a mother bird who builds the nest, feeds the nestlings and comforts them with her soft feathers.

The poem “Mother: A cradle to hold me” by Maya Angelou is a much more private and personal penning by the poet. It starts with the poet describing how her mother had shaped her as a human, literally. She states that her mother’s arms were molded into a cradle, to hold her. She shows remorse and sorrow over the fact that her mother and she have grown apart over the years and she is guilty of not putting inadequate efforts. She appreciates her mother’s candor and wisdom, stating that her mother was always the heart of happiness to her. She thanks her mother for everything she has taught her and for everything she has done in raising her to be a strong woman. She thanks her for not discarding her away when she was selfish and is grateful to her mother for finding something to cherish and love in her.
