Metals can readily conduct heat and electricity whereas nonmetals cannot. Although nonmetals can get warm in a warm environment, they don't actually conduct heat. A nonmetal Styrofoam cooler would have a cool inner surface when filled with ice, the outer part of the cooler couldd feel warm. A metal box fillled with ice would feel ice cold on the outside. And if a person touched a live electric wire with plain metal pliars, they would get shocked. The same wire touched with pliars that have non-conductive rubber or plastic would not get shocked. Anything that is non -conductive is referred to as an insulator.
