◆WATER EXISTS IN THREE FORMS - ICE, WATER AND VAPOUR. 
◆THE THREE FORMS OF WATER ARE INTERCHANGEABLE 
                 ( ICE > WATER > WATER VAPOUR )
◆ ON HEATING ICE IS CONVERTED INTO WATER. 
◆ WATER ON HEATING CONVERTED INTO VAPOUR.
◆ WATER VAPOUR ON CONDENSATION CAN BE CONVERTED INTO           WATER AGAIN. 
◆ WATER ON COOLING ( SOLIDIFICATION ) CAN BE CONVERTED INTO       ICE.

Answer:

A solid has definite volume and shape, A liquid has a definite volume but no definite shape, and a gas has neither a definite volume not shape. The change from solid to liquid usually doesn't significantly change the volume of a substance.
