Akbar was tolerant, partly because he took a Hindu Rajasthani princess as his queen. He proclaimed a new religion/faith and named it Din-i llahi, a compromise religion that synthesized elements from different religions. He was hoping to integrate the empire via this tool.

Aurangzeb was a devout Muslim to the core and furthered it's spread. It is claimed that he destroyed temples and imposed a tax on Hindus. He was frugal personally and did not lavishly spend on public projects like Shah Jahan, who built Taj Mahal at an enormous expense, draining the treasury. Aurangzeb imposed Sharia law strictly.
