Antonio is is in a melancholic and passive mood. But the cause of his sadness is unknown. While Portia there in Belmont is in a melancholic mood because of her father's will(the lottery of caskets in which the suitor which chooses the right casket(which contains Portia's portrait) among the three of lead gold and silver will win her hand in marriage). She can neither choose the suitor herself nor she can deny the one who wins the lottery of caskets.
