O2+ is more stable than O2 as bond order of o2+ is 2.5 and that of o2 is 2.
stability is directly propositional to bond order

Answer:

O2+ is more stable.

Explanation:

The above diagram is the Molecular Orbital Diagram of O2 molecule.

Oxygen has 8 electrons and Oxygen molecule has 16 electrons .

The 16 electrons will arrange in the molecular orbital in the following order:

σ1s²<(σ*1s)²<σ2s²<(σ*2s)²<σz²<πx²=πy²<πx*¹=πy*¹< σz*⁰

where,

  • σ1s is the sigma bonding molecular orbital formed by the direct overlap of 1s orbital of both oxygen atom
  • σ*1s is the sigma antibonding molecular orbital.
  • σ2s is the sigma bonding molecular orbital formed by the overlap of 2s orbital of both oxygen atom .
  • σ*2s is the sigma antibonding molecular orbital.
  • σz is the sigma bonding molecular orbital formed by the overlap of pz orbital of both oxygen atom.
  • σz* is antibonding molecular orbital.
  • πx is the pi bonding molecular orbital formed by the sidewise overlap of 2px orbital of both oxygen atom .
  • πy is the bonding molecular orbital formed by the sidewise overlap of 2p orbital of both oxygen atom .
  • πx* and πy* is the antibonding molecular orbital.

Bond order = 1/2 (Bonding molecular electron- antibonding molecular electron)

Bonding molecular electron means electron present in bonding molecular orbital.

antibonding molecular electron electron present in antibonding molecular orbital.

Bond order

= 1/2 (10-6)

=4/2= 2

O2+ molecule has 15 electrons. 15 Electrons will arrange in the molecular orbital in the following order:

σ1s²<(σ*1s)²<σ2s²<(σ*2s)²<σz²<πx²=πy²<πx*¹=πy*< σz*⁰

Bond order= 1/2 (Bonding molecular electron- antibonding molecular electron)

Bond order

= 1/2 (10-5)

=5/2= 2.5

Now we can see that Bond order of O2+ molecule is more than that of O2 molecule.

more is the Bond order more will be the stable Molecule.

Another thing is No of antibonding electrons(6) are more in case of O2 molecule whereas O2+ has only 5 electrons.

More the electrons present in the antibonding orbital , more will be the unstable Molecule.

So O2+ is more stable than O2 molecule.
