Pigeon

A pigeon's stomach has two parts. They are proventriculus and

i. Proventriculus - It is the first part of the stomach. It is tubular and has an internal lining of gastric glands. A red-coloured spleen is attached on its outer side.

ii. Gizzard - It is the second part of the stomach. It is semi-circular in shape. Its walls are highly muscular. There is very little space inside it. Internally the wall has a number of ridges and its epithelial lining is very thick and tough. It has countless tubular glands.

The function of the gizzard is to crush the food. It acts as a grinding machine and compensates the role of teeth in a pigeon.

Cow

It has a ruminant stomach. There are four compartments. They are rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum.

i. Rumen - It is the largest part of the stomach. It can hold 50 gallons of partially digested food. It has enzymes which start the process of digestion. They break down the hard food and cellulose. The food spends 15 to 48 hours in and out of the rumen. During this time it is chewed, swallowed, regurgitated and swallowed again and again before moving to the reticulum.

ii. Reticulum - It traps the unwanted things like pieces of fencing, rocks and pieces of wire. It softens the grass which has been eaten and forms small wads of cud.

iii. Omasum - It has a number of folds to filter the food, squeeze out the water and further break down the cud.

iv. Abomasum - It completes the digestion process. It passes the essential nutrients to the bloodstream and sends the rest through the intestines.
