Subject-centred approach and Competency-based approach are a few of the various approaches to learning and teaching.
Subject-centered approach - Here, the focus is on the delivery of the subject contents by the teacher for students to acquire i.e., importance is laid on topics/concepts included in the subject, around which all the teaching and learning activities revolve. It is a common practice in most of the schools to strictly follow the syllabus and textbooks both for teaching and learning. The textbook in the subject is considered as the storehouse of all the required concepts, examples and exercises that are required for the teaching-learning process. The advantages are that there is a fixed syllabus and the students will just have to study the questions given at the end of the lesson. The disadvantages are - the Textual questions are used for evaluation which lacks variety and creativity and the knowledge acquired by the students is bookish with no novelty in the teaching-learning process.
Competency-based approach - Competency is the essential skill, knowledge, attitude, and behavior required for effective performance of a real-world task or activity. It is based on analyzing if the students have acquired the knowledge, understood and have the skills that are expected from learning the concepts from the topic in the classroom. This helps in planning how to teach or facilitate the students’ learning in order to attain the goal but also assess and find the answer to the above issue. Such outcome-based approach to education is often called ‘competency-based education’. The advantages are - The child is kept away from rote memorization and Individual students learn at their own pace. The disadvantages are - The slower and weaker students may lag behind when compared with the smarter students.
