Subject-centred approach

Ralph Tyler laid out the subject-centred curriculum in his seminal book, Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction in 1949. It is also known as the knowledge-centred curriculum. It is a traditional model. It is the most commonly used method of instruction.

This system focuses on the development of the curriculum rather than all round human development. Subject specialists develop high standards for student uniformity. They include what the society expects the students to know and be able to do at different grade levels.

Advantages

1. This method focuses on one subject at a time.

2. It develops high standards for student uniformity.

3. It enables the student to study the subject in which he is interested.

4. Teachers have to be trained in smaller areas of knowledge that means only in a particular subject.

Disadvantages

1. This method does not engage the students.

2. It focuses on the development of the curriculum instead of all round human development.

3. No effort is made to integrate the knowledge gained in different subjects.

Competency based approach

Competency based training and education is used in learning concrete skills instead of abstract learning. Competency based learning refers to systems of instruction, assessment, grading, and academic reporting which are based on the students' demonstration that they have learned the skills and acquired the knowledge that they are expected to learn during the course of their education.

Competency based education ensures that a student graduates as a highly competent professional. It does not focus on credit hours or seat time instead it gives importance to the student's knowledge and skills.

Advantages

1. It is very beneficial for independent and adult learners. The students can work at their own pace to demonstrate mastery of a subject.

2. It can lead to more efficient outcomes as it is tailored to meet different learning abilities.

3. It is flexible and depends on the individual learner.

4. It provides personalized learning opportunities to the students.

Disadvantages

1. This method does not work well with all learning environments.

2. The student's focus is on the assessment instead of completing the assignments.
