The Indus Valley Civilization contained more than 1,000 cities and settlements
Explanation:
Similarities
- First, Indus Valley Civilisation's engineering ability was exceptional because of its age, too. In their building methods they adopted modern principles, and achieved advanced construction standards. Our cities too have been built with advanced technologies
- Second, The standard of urban planning indicates urban planning expertise and successful local govts that gave high hygienic priority. Our cities too have been built and managed on this concept
- Third, In the cities there were well-organized drainage networks for waste water , garbage disposal systems & probably even granaries & baths. Individual houses used to draw water from wells, whereas waste water on the main streets was directed into covered drains. These facilities are found in our city too such as waste disposal and management, drainage facility, etc
- Fourth, The houses opened exclusively to "inner courtyards & small lanes" the smallest houses on the outskirts of the city, were considered to be linked with the system and further stated that cleanliness was an essential matter. Such facilities are found in our cities too, that is houses having courtyards, opening to small lanes etc
- Fifth, The biggest & most important structure in the city was the temple known as the Ziggurat. This was the city center of life instead of being only a shrine. It served as as a town hall. Since ziggurat priests operated irrigation systems, the people went to the priests with grain to pay for the service when they had wanted the access to river water for their crop irrigation and other things. This is similar to Metro Water facility that our city has where we have a main water facility for the entire city and which is distributed to the people based on payment and schedule
Dissimilarities
- First, the cities were established near the River Indus because the Indians needed water from the river to drink, wash and farm their fields. Second, they even made boats for commuting up & down the rivers. Our city is not close to the water body and we commute through different means of transportation
- Third, the towns were constructed on massive platforms and high fields to defend them from seasonal floods and contaminated water because the river was quite nearby. We do not have such facility and our city is built on a lowland, though we have different infrastructure to protect us from natural disasters
- The massive walls probably defended the Indus cities against flooding and may have deterred military conflicts. However, major monumental buildings have not been built. Fourth, There is the "Great Bath" in the city of Mohenjo-daro, that may have been an important "public bathing & social place". Our city do not have such massive walls or great bath
- Fifth Though the citadels & large walls existed temples, monuments & palaces temples are not visible in the Indus valley civilisation. Our cities have temples and monuments etc.
