Indian women enjoyed equal status along with men during the-
Vedic period. Women had access to education and married after
they reached adulthood. Further, they enjoyed the right to
choose their partners. Rig Veda Upanishads mention several women sages and seers, notably Gargi and Maitreyi.
Women’s status started deteriorating since the post-Vedic period as was observed from the restrictions imposed on women’s lifestyle.
