The tundra is a biome characterized by an extremely cold climate, little precipitation, poor nutrients, and a short growing season. Other characteristics include low biodiversity, simple plants, limited drainage, and large variations in populations. There are two types of tundra: arctic and alpine.Humans have been part of the tundra ecosystem for thousands of years. The indigenous people of Alaska's tundra regions are the Aleut, Alutiiq, Inupiat, Central Yup'ik and Siberian Yupik. Originally nomadic, Alaska Natives have now settled in permanent villages and towns.
