The first poem narrates an episode which reveals the horrors of war. It highlights the fact that the physical pain is not as significant as mental pain. Young people have to sacrifice their lives to satisfy the politicians' lust for power. When the young soldier dies, the narrator feels greatly pained at his death. He sheds his tears and seems to raise a pertinent question, "why war is fought?"
The second poem is a scathing attack on those who still advocate the manufacture and use of mortal weapons of war, especially nuclear weapons.
