This genus is widely distributed and represented by about 250 species that grow abundantly in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. The common Indian species are: Pteris vittata, P. cretica, P. biaurita, P. quadriaurita, P. stenophylla and P. wallichiana. However, Pteris vittata is low level fem and brings out new leaves throughout the year.
It is quite common along mountain walls and grows upto 1200 metres above sea level, while P. quadriaurita grows abundantly along road-sides and the valleys throughout the North-western and western Himalayas. P. cretica grows well from 1200-2400 metres a.s.l.
