“Did you enjoy yourself?” asks Mummy Rabbit, as Ria and Romi return from the market with Daddy Rabbit.

“It was so much fun,” says Ria, putting down the bag of carrots. She holds one up. “See how bright and orange they are. Daddy taught us how to select the best ones.”

Mummy Rabbit smiles at her. “Since you’ve got so many carrots, let’s make a sweet dish with them,” she says. “What would you like to have?”

“Carrot kheer,” says Ria immediately.

“Yummy,” says Romi, clapping his hands.

“Shall I get the recipe book?” asks Daddy Rabbit.

Mummy Rabbit shakes her head. “I’m going to use Nani Rabbit’s carrot kheer recipe today,” she says.

Ria and Romi smack their lips. Nani Rabbit’s carrot kheer is simply delicious!

“I have an idea,” says Daddy Rabbit. “Why don’t we all help Mummy Rabbit make the carrot kheer?”

But Mummy Rabbit doesn’t look very sure about this. She finally agrees when she sees how eager Ria and Romi are to help. “But you’ll have to follow my instructions,” she says, as they follow her into the kitchen.

Mummy Rabbit reads Nani Rabbit’s recipe from an old diary as the others empty the bags.

The Rabbit family kitchen is soon bustling with activity. Romi removes the green tops of the carrots and washes them. Ria peels the carrots. And Daddy Rabbit grates them into a bowl.

Meanwhile, Mummy Rabbit heats some ghee in a pan and fries a few cashews and raisins until they turn a golden brown. She keeps them aside.

“It looks like we have to quickly fry the carrots next,” says Daddy Rabbit, glancing at the recipe. He hands the bowl to Mummy Rabbit.

Mummy Rabbit fries the grated carrots until they change colour and turn slightly softer.

“Please add the milk now,” says Mummy Rabbit.

While Daddy Rabbit pours the milk, Mummy Rabbit gets busy with preparing the mawa. Romi sniffs the air. He just can’t wait until the carrot kheer is ready.

“What’s the next step?” asks Ria.

“Add sugar,” says Mummy Rabbit, as she opens the refrigerator.

The milk soon starts to boil. Mummy Rabbit turns down the heat and adds the mawa and sugar.

“Did you just add sugar?” asks Daddy Rabbit thoughtfully. “Because I added sugar earlier.”

“So did I,” says Ria, in a small voice.

Mummy Rabbit looks at both of them in despair.

“Perhaps we can remove some sugar,” says Romi.

“Or add salt,” suggests Ria.

But Mummy Rabbit shakes her head. “I don’t think that’s going to work,” she says, with a sigh.

“Does that mean we won’t get any carrot kheer?” wails Romi.

“No,” says Mummy Rabbit. “We have enough carrots to make more. But it does mean that I want you all out of my kitchen.”

Ria, Romi, and Daddy Rabbit grin sheepishly as they walk out.

About half an hour later, the delicious smell of freshly made carrot kheer fills the house again.

So as the Rabbit family gets ready to enjoy the tasty carrot kheer, it’s time for us to take our leave as well. Enjoy your meal, everyone!
