COMPETENCY BASED QUESTION Peter, Kevin James, Reeta and Veena were students of Class 9th B at Govt Sr Sec School, Sector 5, Gurgaon. Once the teacher told Peter to think a number x and to Kevin to think another number y so that the difference of the numbers is 10 (x > y).Now the teacher asked James to add double of Peter's number and that three times of Kevin's number, the total was found 120. Reeta just entered in the class, she did not know any number.The teacher said Reeta to form the 1st equation with two variables x and y.Now Veena just entered the class so the teacher told her to form 2nd equation with two variables x and y.Now teacher Told Reeta to find the values of x and y. Peter and kelvin were told to verify the numbers x and y. Q 1. What was the equation formed by Reeta? * 1 point a. x - y = 20 b. x - y = 10 c. x + y = 10 d. x + y = 20 Q 2. What was the equation formed by Veena? * 1 point a. 2x - 3y = 120 b. x + y = 120 c. 3x + 2y = 120 d. 2x + 3y = 120 Q 3. Which number did Peter think ? * 1 point a. 20 b. 30 c. 50 d. 40 Q 4. EVALUATION

Here it is given that the teacher told Peter to think a number x and to Kevin to think another number y so that the difference of the numbers is 10 (x > y)

x - y = 10 - - - - - - - (1)

Now the teacher asked James to add double of Peter's number and that three times of Kevin's number, the total was found 120

2x + 3y = 120 - - - - - - (2)

The teacher said Reeta to form the 1st equation with two variables x and y.

So the equation formed by Reeta is

x - y = 10

Hence the correct option is b. x - y = 10

Now the teacher told Veena to form 2nd equation with two variables x and y

So the equation formed by Veena is

2x + 3y = 120

Hence the correct option is d. 2x + 3y = 120

3 × Equation 1 + Equation 2 gives

5x = 150

⇒ x = 30

From Equation 1 we get

y = 30 - 10 = 20

Solving Equation 1 and Equation 2 we get

x = 30 , y = 20

So Peter thought the number 30

Hence the correct option is b. 30

Also Kelvin thought the number 20

Hence the correct option is a. 20

Now the difference of squares of Peter's number and Kelvin's number

= 30² - 20²

= 900 - 400

= 500

Hence the correct option is c. 500
