Competition and Cooperation

(1) Explanations of the interrelation between competition and cooperation have evolved over time. Early research into competition and cooperation defined each of them in terms of the distribution of rewards related to each. The competition was defined as the situation in which rewards are distributed unequally based on performance, cooperation, on the other hand, was defined as a situation in which rewards are distributed equally based on mutual interactive behavior among individuals. By this definition, a competitive situation requires at least one competitor to fail for each competitor that wins, while a cooperative situation offers a reward only if all members of the group receive it.

(2) Researchers have found definitions of competition and cooperation based upon rewards inadequate primarily because definitions of these two concepts based upon rewards depict them as the opposite. In the current understanding, competition is not viewed as opposite of cooperation, instead, cooperation is viewed as an integral component of competition. Cooperation is necessary among team members, perhaps in a sporting event or in a political race, to win the competition, it is equally important to understand that cooperation is of great importance between teams in that same sporting event or ground rules of the game or election to compete.

(3) Interestingly, the word competition is derived from a Latin verb which means “to seek together.” An understanding of the derivation of the word competition supports the understanding that cooperation, rather than evoking a characteristic at the opposite extreme of human nature from the competition is a necessary factor in competition.

1)The topic of the text is competition and cooperation. The text tells us about The meaning and difference in both the words, also tells us about the inter-relation which has evolved between these two words over the time.

2) The author states that the Word cooperation forms an integral part of the word Competition. He also states that the word competition also means to seek together which is somewhere similar to the word and the meaning of cooperation. The Author comments that both cooperation  and competition are necessary in order to win any sort of a event, game, political race, or any sort of competition in life. So as per the author both the terms are very much interrelated.

3)Yes I agree with the author’s comment on the topic because he has correctly stated that without cooperation any competition can’t be win. For example- in a game of volleyball, if there is no proper cooperation among the team members then the team cannot win the competition. So in order to win any sort of a competition, cooperation forms integral part of that whole process.
