A reare gold coin, dating back to the ninth century rule of King Bhoj Deva of Kannauj is
the prized possession of Uttar Pradesh State Museum. Museum authorities claim that there
is only one such coin in India. This 'Adivaraha' (boar) type piece has on its obverse the
legendary figure of a boar, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, lifting the personified earth on
his right elbow; and on the reverse, a calf and a cow. The legend reads Sri Varaha'.
The museum, with about 44,000 coins whose chronological sequence commenced in the
· seventh century B.C., the period when punch marked coins were in circulation can boast
of being the only museum in the country with sword coin belonging to Chandra Gupta U,
beside a gold coin struck by King Mohamad Bin Som. The famous wealth of artistic and
historical significance preserved in the museum include the coin depository of the Kusan
and Gupta rulers.
