The two key bravery awards given to soldiers of the Indian army for an outstanding act of self-sacrifice away from the battlefield, courage, or valor are:

# Ashoka Chakra: This is the highest peacetime military decoration award given to an Indian soldier, and is the peacetime counterpart of Param Vir Chakra. It was initially termed as Ashoka Chakra, Class I.

# Kirti Chakra: This is the second highest peacetime military decoration award given to an Indian soldier, and is the peacetime counterpart of Maha Vir Chakra. It was initially termed as Ashoka Chakra, Class II.

Both of these awards can also be given posthumously to the family member of the army personnel. Although they look identical, the Ashoka Chakra medal is slightly bigger than the Kirti Chakra medal.

Some other gallantry awards include Bar to Shaurya Chakra, Shaurya Chakra, Bar to Sena and Sena medals.
