Soldiers of the Indian Army are entitled to three wartime gallantry awards. These are as follows:

# Param Vir Chakra – Awarded for a daring, pre-eminent or conspicuous act of self-sacrifice or valor. This is the highest military decoration given for outstanding acts of valor during wartime and the medal is made of bronze.

# Maha Vir Chakra – Awarded for conspicious gallantry in the presence of enemy. This is the second highest military decoration and the medal is made of standard silver.

# Vir Chakra – Awarded for acts of bravery in the battlefield. This is the third highest military decoration and the medal is made of silver.

Apart from the above, the three wartime distinguished service medals are Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, and Yudh Seva Medal.
