SIR,
Dear Editor
According to many English dictionaries corruption ‘is a way of dishonesty, late actions and foul schemes that destroy trust'. Others define it as an illegal and treacherous behaviour and misuse of power, especially by the elite and the powerful people of the government.
Corruption has become quite widespread in Kashmir. It has become a common and familiar language in our society. From clerks to top ranking officers, from peons to managers, every one reeks of corruption. Corruption has left a very deep impact on the intellectual and dedicated youth of Kashmir, especially the ones who are being deprived and neglected everywhere. Indeed it pushes the youth towards frustration. If your rights are being denied and obliterated every day, it leads to a sense of deprivation. It seems dedication and qualification are no longer required for a job. To be able to get a job means that you either have to have loads of influence or money.
It is the dull and incompetent system of the State which promotes rampant corruption through officials who frequently use their government chairs for bribe and nepotism. Perhaps it would not be wrong to say that the increasing unemployment in Kashmir is an indication of a failed state and its institutions. Bad governance, lack of transparency, lack of accountability is what is hindering our progress and development. We live in a state where a crisp note can take you anywhere and get you out of anything. We have people with fake degrees holding offices and drafting policies.
It is time we seriously started working towards ending this unjust practice. It is time to rid our society of this plague. Let us pledge to demolish corruption and favouritism from our valley and restore it to its previous glory. It is not only the work of the State administrators or media rather it is the duty of every individual of Kashmir society to fight and end corruption. So, let us all fight to end this practice once and for all.
