Virus can be categorized under many heads and accordingly they might be different in different cases. In terms of their shape, they are four in number i.e. filamentous, isometric, head and tail shaped or enveloped in shape.

Again if a person categorizes them on the basis of nucleic acids, then they  are RNA virus, DNA virus or RNA-DNA virus respectively.

Again , they can further be differentiated into plant virus or animal virus depending upon  the host in which they affect or feed upon. For example potato yellow dwarf virus is a good example of virus growing on the surface of the plant. This can survive in leaf hoppers as well. Another virus that signifies animal virus is the vesicular stomatitis.
