The production of ATP in aerobic organisms takes place through many complex processes involving several chemical reactions.

  • The glucose which is synthesized in the organism is broken down when energy demand of the cell is high. This breakdown happens through a series of ten reactions collectively called Glycolysis.
  • In Glycolysis, one glucose molecule undergoes metabolism into simpler substances by several enzymes, producing of two molecules of pyruvate. Pyruvate is further oxidised enzymatically to give Acetyl CoA.
  • The next step is the Citric Acid Cycle, where there is yet another series of reactions that give large amount of high energy compounds like FADH2 and NADH+.
  • These compounds then enter the Electron Transport Chain in the inner mitochondrial membrane where series of oxidations and reductions finally give rise to massive amounts of ATP. The ATP is produced by ATPase enzyme by maintaining a proton gradient across the membrane.
  • Totally, 38 ATP are produced in aerobic respiration.
