Useful bacteria --> Rhizobium form root nodules --> Nodules of the leguminous plant --> Nitrogen fixation
All living things require nitrogen. Even though 80% of the atmosphere is made up of nitrogen it is not possible to utilize the molecular form of nitrogen. So nitrogen fixation is necessary. Plants receive the nitrates from the soil, or fertilizers or from bacteria like Rhizobium which form nodules on the plant's roots. They take the energy from the plants to power the fixation process. Leguminous plants like peas and beans are the only ones which can support Rhizobium nodules.
