Answer:

(a) Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)

(b) Mucus

(c) Proteolytic enzymes (lipase and pepsin)

(d) Kills bacteria

(e) Protection of inner cells of stomach

(f) Breakdown fats and proteins

Explanation:

Gastric glands present in the wall of the stomach produces gastric juice which contains following components:

  • Hydrochloric Acid (HCl): Hydrochloric acid in gastric juice breaks down food and digestive enzymes break down proteins. Acidic gastric juice also kills bacteria.
  • Mucus: Mucus covers the stomach wall with a protective coating. The inner cells of the stomach secrete mucus. This mucous membrane is very important for us because it acts as a protective layer of the stomach against the enzymes and acids it secretes.
  • Pepsin: Pepsin is a stomach enzyme that digests proteins in ingested food. The main cells of the stomach secrete pepsin as an inactive zymogen called pepsinogen. The parietal cells of the stomach secrete hydrochloric acid, which lowers the pH of the stomach. Low pH (1.5-2) activates pepsin.
  • Lipase: Lipase is an enzyme used by the body to break down fats in food so that they can be absorbed in the intestines. Lipase is produced in the pancreas, mouth and stomach.
