All the living cells are bound by a membrane called cell membrane (or plasma membrane). It surrounds its inner gel like material called cytoplasm which consists of cell organelles and nucleus. The nucleus has a thread like network called chromatin which condenses to form chromosomes responsible for the transfer of genes.

What are cells?

Cells are the basic fundamental unit of living matter. Cells are the building blocks of a living organism, that is capable of functioning independently (only in case of prokaryotic cells).

Each and every cell of a living organism consists of three basic structures,

\bigstar {\sf {\orange {Cell\ membrane}}}

\bigstar {\sf {\orange {Cytoplasm}}}

\bigstar {\sf {\orange {Nucleus}}}

Let's understand the functioning of each in brief!

\bf \pink {Cell\ membrane:} Cell membrane or plasma membrane is a selectively permeable membrane that allows the entry and exit of specific things in and out of the cell. Apart from this, the cell membrane provides protection to the cells, separates the cell from other cells and the surrounding medium. It also contains the protoplasm (living matter) of the cell.

\bf \pink {Cytoplasm:} Cytoplasm is the jelly - like fluid present in the empty space between cell membrane and the nucleus. The cytoplasm has many cell organelles suspended in it (along with nucleus), therefore all the living functions take place in the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm also acts as a medium for exchange of substances between the cell organelles and nucleus.

\bf \pink {Nucleus:} Nucleus is known as the Brain or Boss of a Cell. It controls all the functions of the cell organelles. The nucleus has a thread like structure called chromatin, which condenses when the cell is going to divide to form rod - like structures called chromosomes which contains genes. Therefore the nucleus also helps in the transfer of characteristics from the parents to the offspring.
