Distributive Property is used often in our everyday lives…more often than we probably know! I like to give my students the example of throwing a party and needing food at the grocery store. I need to buy snacks and soda for my party. The grocery store has 1 bag of chips for $3 and 1 gallon sodas for $5. I need to buy 6 bags of chips and 6 gallons of soda. How could I set this up to find the total? I could easily use Distributive Property to group ($3 + $5) and multiply by 6 so it would look like this: 6(3 + 5). This would also be the same as solving it like this: 6 x 3 + 6 x 5. Using Distributive Property would be easier to use, both ways would get a total of $48.
How to Teach Distributive Property
Distribute means to multiply. As we teach this concept, I have found that often times, students forget to distribute the outside number with the second number in the parentheses. One strategy I use to help my students remember to distribute the outside number with both numbers inside the parentheses is to use the word “rainbow.” I teach my students to “rainbow” the outside with both numbers inside of the parenthesis so it creates a “double rainbow.” Of course, I continue to use the “distribute” so that my students use the correct terminology; however, I have found that “rainbowing” has really helped my students retain the “how” of distributing.
What’s the Best Resource to Use to Teach Distributive Property?
One of the best resources I have found to use to teach Distributive Property is using food…because who doesn’t love food! Here is a quick picture of what I mean!
I like to use this note-taker with food (like hamburgers, french fries, and hot dogs) to distribute and my students really seem to connect with this!
I also like to follow-up my note-taker with a great maze activity to help solidify the Distributive Property skills!
