C₆H₆ + 3Cl₂ → C₆H₆Cl₆ (In presence of sunlight)

  • Benzene reacts with Chlorine in presence of sunlight to produce Benzene hexachloride which is also known as gammexane.
  • Due to the free radical mechanism involved, Benzene hexachloride is formed during the reaction.
  • As a result of ultraviolet light from the sun, hot benzene now undergoes an additional reaction with chloride in the presence of ultraviolet light.
  • Chlorine atoms are added to each carbon atom permanently, causing the ring delocalization to end.
  • By this mechanism, the electrons will be equally distributed among the carbons of benzene.
  • Thus, benzene hexachloride is formed as a product of this reaction, which is a gamma isomer, as well as other minor isomers, are formed.
