CO +H_2\rightarrow HCOH

This reaction is not a spontaneous one.

It requires proper catalyst and temperature to go on with this reaction. Normally it is considered that we get methanol on combining carbon monoxide with hydrogen

But this particular reaction of one hydrogen molecule give HCOH or formaldehyde (hydroxymethylene)

Only when further reaction with another molecule is allowed i.e.

HCOH +H_2\rightarrow CH_3OH

we get methanol.
