Explanation:

Whenever the compound of a carboxylic acid is heated with thionyl chloride the hydroxide groups of the acid get substituted with the chloride group given by the thionyl chloride. Therefore in this case, as there are two carboxylic groups therefore on each of them the OH will be replaced by a Cl from thionyl chloride. and as a result, Phthaloyl chloride will get formed.
