This story is about a hare who lived in a jungle and was very proud of his ability to run faster than other animals. A tortoise who lived in the same jungle was once passing by the hare when he noticed the speed of the tortoise and started making fun of him.
The hare taunted the tortoise about how slow he was and he was nothing in comparison with the hare's speed. The tortoise didn't say much instead continued moving.
This made the hare think it as his insult so, he challenged the tortoise to race with him a and whoever will cross the finish line first will be the winner and every single animal of the jungle will see who is the fastest in the whole jungle. The tortoise agreed to him. The race was scheduled for the next day.
On the next day, each and every animal of the jungle gathered to witness the race between the hare and the tortoise. Everyone was making fun of the tortoise and was laughing at him saying that he will definitely loose but this didn't make the tortoise sad and a few moments later the race started.
On the count of three, the hare ran away with his superfast speed and the tortoise started moving with his slow pace. The hare was running towards the finish line when he thought that the tortoise will take an eternity to reach the finish line and till then he should have some rest.
As the hare laid down under a shady tree, he fell asleep. An hour later the tortoise reached the spot where the hare was resting but instead of waking the hare up he continued his journey to the finish line.
Half an hour later the hare woke up with a fresh mind and energised body. He got up and thought that the tortoise was still behind him and he should continue his race to reach the finish line before the tortoise. But as he reached near the finish line, he saw that the tortoise was already crossing the finish line. Seeing this, the hare ran with his top speed but it was all in vain as the tortoise had already crossed the finish line.
All the animals of the jungle were surprised and shocked that a tortoise defeated the fastest runner of the jungle. After that day the overconfidence that the hare had was all broke and shattered and he no longer boasted about his speed and running skills.
