Thomas was walking down the narrow alley when something shiny caught his eye. Surely, that couldn't be gold what he was seeing. He kneeled down beside it and removed the garbage that was surrounding it. He pulled it out and there it lay. A gold ring. At first he didn't know what to do. Was he supposed to ask someone if it belonged to them or was he supposed to just leave it there and keep walking as if he hadn't seen anything? But if not him, someone was bound to pick it up. He got up and quickly slipped it into his pocket. Everything was going to fall into place now. The car loan that has been eating his family's accounts, the stress that was killing his parents' minds, everything. It was all going well until he felt something hit him hard from the back. It was a vehicle. Was it a bus? He didn't know. The next thing he knew was darkness and the pain of something go over his legs. Twice.

Thomas was walking down the narrow alley, when something shiny caught his eye. It was getting dark and the alley was deserted. Casting a quick glance to either side, he decided to take a closer look at the shiny object, lying on the ground by the side of the narrow path.

As he went closer, it sparkled in the lone lamplight shining over it. And as he bent down to take a closer look, he could get a faint, strange smell. Then he got the violent shock of his life, when he realised that he was staring at a lifeless human hand sticking out of the metal drainage grate! The shiny object was a ring with some kind of precious stone on it.

Thomas lost no time in taking out his cell phone and calling the police. His hand shook so violently that he had trouble doing it. While he was at it, he got the second shock - he felt a hand on his left shoulder! But when he turned around, expecting something violent to happen to him, he was comforted by the sight a police constable.

Very soon a small crowd had gathered at the site before Thomas finished giving his statement. And shortly, some kind of heavy vehicle with equipment, was brought in to retrieve the body behind the lifeless hand.

Thomas could not sleep that night and kept tossing and turning in his sleep.

The next day, he found in the third page of the local newspaper, a news heading which read 'Millionaire falls inside open municipal drain and dies'. The photograph underneath it seemed strangely familiar but he could not recall who exactly it was.

It was closer to afternoon, when he realised that the photograph in the newspaper, was of the quiet man he had bumped into at the town pub, the previous evening!
