The mysterious guest (its the topic of the story)
The clock had just struck eleven, and it was the third time that Ritu thought she heard a tap on the window. It was a chilly January night. There was no chance of a friend trying to slip in for a little chit-chat as all were comfortable indoors. She felt a little eerie. She mustered up her courage and stealthily peeped through the curtain.
To her surprise she found a big cockatoo perched on her window sill. It was the knocking intruder. Ritu cautiously opened the window. Immediately the bird flew in and sat straight on the rocking chair. In a manly voice it ordered Ritu to fix it a drink and get some roasted nuts. Ritu was flabbergasted. Could it be a ghost or apparition in the body of the cockatoo, she wondered.
Standing still, she was suddenly pecked hard by the bird. It chided her for standing idly and not following its orders. Shocked, Ritu fled out trembling. When she slipped out of her room she found her whole family standing outside her room.
Just then the clock struck twelve and every one burst out with the greeting, ‘Happy Birthday , Ritu’. Ritu was pleasantly surprised to see her Uncle who was a world famous ornithologist. It was his idea of gifting Ritu a cockatoo. He had brought it specially for her from Australia. It was one of the most talented mimic bird.
Ritu was overjoyed. She hugged everybody and took some nuts for her new pet. Ever since, they have been the fastest of friends.
