x² + 8x - 48 = 0

Add 40 to both sides:

x² + 8x = 48

Add (b/2)² to both sides:

x² + 8x + 4² = 48 + 4²

a² + 2ab + b² = (a + b)²:

(x + 4)² = 48 + 16

Add the right hand side:

(x + 4)² = 64

Square root both sides:

x+ 4 = ±√64

Evaluate right hand side:

x+ 4 = ±8

Subtract 4 from both sides:

x = 8 - 4 or x = -8 - 4

Evaluate right hand side:

x = 4 or x = -12


Answer: x = 4 or x = -12

(X + 4) = ±√64

so ..
