Composed Upon Westminster Bridge
by William Wordsworth
Earth has not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steep
In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne'er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!

What will happen when the city wakes up?

Answer:

The opening line says, with its showy declaration, to steady iambic beat of the metropolitan heart.

It's the view of the the city before it has woken up. The poet says one should not be affected by such a Vista.

Then the poet describes the architecture and the great river.

The poet talks about the early hours of the morning.

In Composed Upon Westminster Bridge by William Wordsworth , the poet describes London and the River Thames, as viewed from Westminster Bridge in the early morning.

Explanation:

  • Wordsworth says, in the early morning sun, London has a splendid view since the city has not woken and such industrial processes and government activities have not yet started.
  • But once London (the city) comes out of slumber (wakes up), man-made activities will interrupt this gentle calm. The world of trade, the vessels and ships coursing along the Thames will transcend the natural pace of the river. The towers, ships, theatres, temples, and domes still apparently inert in passive submission to the natural world now, would be over-turned when London wakes up.
  • In actuality, the nature's world is at the mercy of mankind and the systems of industry and trade which rule from the city, just as the sky will be polluted by the plumes of smoke from the factories' chimneys.
