The plasma membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer, which is two layers of phospholipids back-to-back. Phospholipids are lipids with a phosphate group attached to them. The phospholipids have one head and two tails.

The plasma membrane is flexible and is made up of organic molecules called lipids and proteins. However, we can observe the structure of plasma membrane only through an electron microscope. The flexibility of plasma membrane also enables the cell to engulf food and other material from it's external environment. This process is known as endocytosis.
