"     Alcohol is the solvent used in cough syrups. Alcohol is an organic solvent with a -ROH hydroxyl group. Due to its excellent intermolecular bonding of hydrogen molecules with the solute particles added in cough syrup, like menthol and herbal extracts which are otherwise insoluble in water, alcohol is the most preferred solvent while preparing cough syrups.

This miscibility property of alcohol prevents coagulation of solute particles and stabilizes the syrup at all times. Alcohol also helps in better absorption of the syrup by the body. Alcohol also has preservative qualities and prevents the growth of microbes in pharmaceutical preparations."
