Explanation:

If a compound does not contain alpha hydrogen, why not show an aldol condensation reaction? ... In the first step of aldol condensation ( base catalysed ) the base comes and abstract the acidic hydrogen and form carbanion. If alpha hydrogen is not present then carbanion will not be formed and the reaction will not proceed.

Carbonyl compounds which do not have alpha hydrogens can not form an enolate, they cannot undergo the aldol reaction.

Exampe: simplest aldehyde, methanal (formaldehyde) cannot undergo the aldol reaction
