Compound X can be methane or any other hydrocarbon. The basic reaction of these hydrocarbons for instance methane burns to produce water vapour and carbon(IV) Oxide( compound Y).

This reaction is characteristic of most organic compounds and the product products produced by these oxidation reactions is only water vapour and carbon (IV) Oxide.
