- Ioniztion energy decreases as one moves down the group of a periodic table as the effective nuclear charge almost remains constant while the atomic size increases significantly due to addition of extra shells.
- Beryllium has a very high ionization energy, so formation of the divalent ion by the removal of electrons is difficult.
- Hence beryllium form more covalent compounds.
