A democracy is the only form of governing a country so far that has been stable enough to sustain a country and keep its inhabitants happy. In democracy the most important aspect is freedom. You're free to choose your religion, free to marry anyone, free to pursue your hobbies, free to have an opinion and so on.
A democracy is important because in the thousands upon thousands of years, ever since humans started a system of governing, a democracy has been the best in terms of satisfaction and being fair.
Rights are important because they are what let us choose what we do in our lives and govern ourselves. Their importance can be realised if we realise what it would be like if we didn't have them in the first place. We wouldn't be able to protect ourselves, give our personal opinion on subjects, there would be no moral code of conduct if we didn't have them etc.
