Explanation:

1. The longest flowing river in India is the Ganges or Ganga followed by Godavari, Yamuna, Krishna and Narmada. The longest river which flows through India is the Indus which originates in Tibet and enters Pakistan before flowing into the Arabian Sea.

2. So that the earth would not be shattered by the impact of her descent, Lord Shiva caught Ganges in his hair as she cascaded down from heaven to the Himalyas. Ganges then followed Bhagiratha out of the mountains, across the plains to the sea, where she restored his dead ancestors and lifted them to paradise.

3. Bhagiratha prayed to Brahma that Ganga comes down to Earth. Brahma agreed and he ordered Ganga to go down to the Earth and then on to the nether regions so that the souls of Bhagiratha's ancestors would be able to go to heaven. ... Ganga arrogantly fell on Shiva's head.

4. Earlier in Summers and Monsoon Ganga used to flood the upper plains of North India. But due to water management practiced by King Bhagirath, floods were managed effectively. Since much efforts were concentrated and result was success, Ganga came to be called Bhagirathi in context of Bhagirath.
