Draw the character-sketch of Matilda Loisel.
Ans. Mme Loisel was born in a poor family. She had to marry
a small clerk. She was pretty and charming. Poverty did not allow
her to be elegant. She was depressed by her humble
surroundings like shabby and worn out furniture. She felt as if
she had married beneath her She dreamed of a luxuriant house.
She desired for decorative pieces of furniture to be displayed in
the house. She was anxious to be the centre of attraction among
high society ladies. She looked forward to mix and chat with
men of note and distinction. Her beauty. grace and charm made
her self-possessed lady. Vanity took charge of her. She would
not attend a party hosted by her husband's boss in a shabby
dress and without wearing jewellery
Her unrealizable ambition led her to borrow a precious
necklace from her friend. Loss of the necklace proved to be the
OSs of her happiness. She had to borrow heavy amount to replace
the necklace. In order to pay off the loan she had to work hard.
