Zeus and Hermes were Greek gods. They often visited the world of men and women in disguise. Late one afternoon, they came to the house of an old couple and knocked at the door.“Come in,” said the old man, opening the door wide.It was so small that Zeus and Hermes had to bend their heads to enter the cottage.“Please sit down,” said the old man’s wife. There was only one bed, one table and a bench.“Have you travelled far?” asked the old man.“Yes, we have,” said Hermes, “we’ve come a long way today.”“Do make yourselves comfortable while we get a meal ready,” said the man and gathered some vegetables from his garden while his wife started the fire. When the food was ready, they set it on the table with a jug of milk and some figs from the tree. The jug held only four cups of milk. When the old man filled all the cups, the jug was empty. Zeus was thirsty. So he drank from his cup and asked for more. The old man was sad. He knew there was no more milk in the house. He looked into the jug—perhaps there was a little left? The jug was full!
