The fox wishes more and more to take revenge on the rabbit for all his tricks. He enlists help from his "cousin," the wolf, and together they plan to catch him. They simply intend to trap him at the fox's house with the fake news that the fox has died. But they underestimate Brer Rabbit's ability to see through their lie. He goes to the fox's house knowing the truth but still cautious, and he simply tricks fox into giving away the truth by speaking from the dead.

Analysis

The story brings together two of the enemies of the rabbit against him, but they are no match at all. Singly he is much more insightful than they could ever be, and the simple strategy he uses is like a childish trick not requiring much thought at all. Lester indulges his sense of humor with many funny lines and details. "He wouldn't come in my house if you promised him free lettuce and yogurt for a year," the fox realizes in contemporary speech.

Several expressions give a sense of the folk humor of language and idiom. For example, "a teenichy voice," "This was bad news that was sho' nuf good news," he "peeked half-a-eyeball out," and others.
