Compute the mode for the following frequency distribution.

Size of items: |0-4 |4-8 |8-12 |12-16 |16-20| |20-40 |24-28 |28-32 |32-36 |36-40

Frequency: |5 |7 |9 |17 |12 |10 |6 |3 |1 |0

Mode = l + (f1-f0/2f1-f0-f2) ×h

l= lower limit of the modal class
h=size of the class intervals
f1=frequency of the modal class
f0=frequency of the class preceding the modal class
f2=frequency of the class succeed in the modal class

SOLUTION:

Here , the highest frequency is of the class 12 -16, which is 17. Hence, the modal class is 12-16.

l=12, f0=9, f1= 17,f2= 12, h= 4

Mode = l + (f1-f0/2f1-f0-f2) ×h

Mode= 12+((17-9)/(2×17-9-12)) ×4

Mode= 12 + (8/34-21) ×4

Mode= 12+ (8/13) × 4

Mode= 12+ 32/13

Mode= 12+2.46

Mode= 14.46

Hence, the mode is 14 .46
