The increasing applications of the computer in the teaching of biology are critically reviewed in the context of the growing importance of the computer in education. Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) is discussed with special reference to biology and examples of a range of the currently available computer-based teaching materials for biology are given. Some of the problems, and the costs, of Computer Assisted Learning are discussed. Computer Managed Learning (CML) is described and discussed with special reference to the Havering project.
